Show Some Love!
Today, NSC affirms our commitment and resolve, as we have for the past 95 years, to serving those who seek safety and freedom here in Philadelphia. We are humbled and honored to support our immigrant and refugee friends.
"Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome."
- Emma Lazarus
Just three years after Nationalities Service Center's (NSC) founding, its staff and clients faced their first big challenge with the passage of the 1924 Quota Act. Though it was originally founded to serve young immigrant women, NSC expanded its services during this time to provide assistance to the women's families impacted by the Act and began providing legal help and other support services. Barely twenty years later, staff in the 1940s noted that Americans were tired after World War II and were afraid of immigration and indifferent to human suffering. Despite the public sentiment, NSC continued to resettle thousands of Europeans displaced by the war.
In 2016, NSC has served a record number of immigrants and refugees from 121 countries in the midst of a deeply polarized national dialogue about refugee resettlement and immigration reform. The rhetoric of this election season coupled with the outpouring of encouragement from our supporters has demonstrated how divided our country is on this issue.
Today, NSC affirms our commitment and resolve, as we have for the past 95 years, to serving those who seek safety and freedom here in Philadelphia. We are humbled and honored to support our immigrant and refugee friends. And just as our predecessors have done, we will continue to help our clients and their families lay the groundwork for sustainable lives in the United States.
Show some love and be a champion for immigrants and refugees, both here in Philadelphia and across the nation, by making a gift today. More than ever before, your support is needed to welcome those who are seeking freedom and opportunity.
