NSC Launches Smoking Cessation Initiative
With the tools and methods presented in this training, case managers and other staff members can help clients to seek out the necessary referrals to better their own health and the health of those around them.
This summer, NSC's Health and Wellness team was awarded a small grant from the PA Refugee Health Health Promotion Program through the Office of Refugee Resettlement to work on smoking cessation awareness and resources. As a result of this, materials were created and translated into some of the most common client languages to help refugee and immigrant clients quit smoking. In addition, Smoke Free Philly came to NSC on July 28th to deliver a smoking cessation training to staff members for best practices regarding smoking cessation.
The training consisted of information regarding: the history of tobacco, health promotion, policy changes over time, what is in a cigarette, health effects of smoking, neurobiology of tobacco use and addiction, and ended with best practices and useful tools for helping clients quit smoking in a culturally competent way. With the tools and methods presented in this training, case managers and other staff members can help clients to seek out the necessary referrals to better their own health and the health of those around them. NSC also plans to launch smoking cessation consultation in partnership with the Drexel College of Medicine this fall.
