The Importance of NSC's English Program
Starting over in a new country takes courage. For many newcomers, learning English is one of the first steps toward building a new life. It is about more than language. It is about making connections, reaching goals, and finding a place to belong. As communication skills grow, students build friendships, connect with neighbors and coworkers, and feel more at home in their community.
This year, our General English program has helped students do exactly that.
In November 2024, three siblings arrived from Afghanistan and were resettled by NSC. Like many newly arrived families, they faced the challenge of learning a new language while adapting to a new country. When they enrolled in NSC's youth programming and began General English classes in January 2025, they had very limited English skills. Still, they came ready to learn and determined to create new opportunities for themselves and their family.
Their hard work paid off. One sibling completed all five levels of General English and graduated from the program by September 2025. They then began studying for their GED, passed two of the four required exams, and secured a full-time job, which they continue to hold today.
The other two siblings recently completed Level 5 and are now beginning their own GED journeys. One has already started a part-time job. Together, they have made remarkable progress in a short time.
Their story is about more than academic and career success. It is about growing confidence, new opportunities, and deeper connections to their community. As their English skills grew, so did their ability to connect with others, navigate daily life, and take part in their new community. What began with learning English has become a pathway to a brighter future.
A similar journey unfolded for a young newcomer from the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
After arriving in the United States in December 2024, they enrolled in NSC's youth programming with a clear goal: to finish their education. Having nearly completed 11th grade in their home country, they were determined to earn a high school diploma despite the challenges of starting over in a new language and a new environment.
After participating in General English classes, they gained the skills and confidence needed to take the next step. In September 2025, they enrolled in an accelerated GED and high school completion program at South Philadelphia High School.
Nine months later, that goal became a reality.
Through dedication, perseverance, and hard work, they earned enough credits to receive a high school diploma and proudly graduated with the South Philadelphia High School Class of 2026. This fall, they will continue their educational journey at the Community College of Philadelphia.
These stories remind us that opportunity can change lives. A classroom becomes more than a place to learn English. It becomes a place where confidence grows, goals take shape, and new possibilities begin.
Every new word learned, every exam passed, every job secured, and every diploma earned is a step forward. It is proof that with support, determination, and opportunity, newcomers can build successful futures and strong connections in their communities.
Through General English classes, students are not just learning a language. They are building futures, strengthening communities, and finding a place where they belong.
