Family Literacy Program participants

Family Literacy Program

The Family Literacy Program, funded by the William Penn Foundation (WPF), serves immigrant families with children ages 0–8 who reside in Philadelphia. The program is free and open to the public. To be eligible, participants must be Philadelphia residents and caregivers of a child age 8 or younger. The goal is to help caregivers improve their English, parenting, and literacy skills while equipping them with the tools and resources needed to support their children's educational development. In addition to educational classes, families receive case management support and referrals to community resources as needed.

The program consists of four core components:

  1. English Instruction

We offer both in-person and online English classes twice a week. In-person classes are held at our office. Classes are available at four proficiency levels, ranging from Pre-Literate to Intermediate, to meet the diverse needs of our learners.

  2. Parent Enrichment

These classes equip caregivers with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate the American education system and support their children's development. Topics include understanding school expectations, establishing healthy routines such as consistent bedtimes, limiting screen time, and using positive discipline strategies.

  3. Interactive Literacy Activities

Families participate in engaging literacy activities designed to strengthen parent-child interactions and promote learning at home. Activities may include shared reading, storytelling, practicing handwriting, and other age-appropriate educational exercises.

  4. Case Management

Individualized support is provided to help families access community resources, address barriers to participation, and achieve their educational and family goals. Staff work closely with families to connect them with services and provide ongoing guidance and support.
