Akbar Ahmadzai joined Nationalities Service Center in 2016, and oversees the Department of Language Access and Proficiency which provides a wide array of programs and services including in-person interpretation, translation of documents, and training for medical professionals and English language learners. He enjoys working on a team of bright people with interesting ideas.
Akbar has 14 years of leadership, strategic program management and development experience in both conflict and post-conflict settings, including the management of complex development programs in Afghanistan. He has held positions such as Senior Technical Advisor, Program Director of Implementation, Executive Director, and Deputy Country Director with USAID and other international agencies in Afghanistan, and short-term consultant experiences from Haiti and Liberia. Prior to joining NSC, Akbar served as Senior Technical Advisor for USAID’s Afghanistan Workforce Development Program that addressed the challenges of high unemployment caused by the gap between the limited number of Afghans who possessed technical and business management skills and the market demands for skilled labor, business administrators and managers.
Akbar holds a B.A. in Journalism/Communications from Kabul University in Afghanistan. He is currently working on an online MBA from Edinburgh Business School in Scotland.
